Interim Government guidance was published in 2002 on the importance of improving the flood resistance of the fabric of buildings. This was so they could be protected from flood damage by removable household flood products, such as flood boards. It also covered the use of temporary barriers to keep water away from properties.
Following on from this, two R&D projects have been completed to support the informed use of local flood protection products. They cover the:
- repair or adaptation of buildings that have been, or may be, affected by flooding
- testing of temporary flood protection products installed in the event of an imminent flood and removed when the flood hazard is over
Both projects were led by the former Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) under its Construction Industry Partners in Innovation (PII) scheme. This science was supported by many stakeholders, including:
- Defra
- the Environment Agency
- the Association of British Insurers (ABI)
The DTI was replaced by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) in 2007.
This project ran from 2003 to 2005.
