You must be registered with the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to guard cash or valuables transported in the UK.
This includes if you work or supply people to transport property in vehicles specially manufactured or adapted to have secure transportation as their primary function and to guard property against:
- destruction or damage
- being stolen
- being otherwise dishonestly taken or obtained
There are 2 types of SIA licence:
- a front line licence for operatives who guard and transport cash and valuables
- a non-front line licence for managers, supervisors and other staff who don’t carry out front line duties
You must be at least 18 years of age to obtain a licence , and you must pass an identity check and a criminal record check. For front-line roles you must also hold the appropriate SIA-approved qualification.
The SIA can attach any conditions to the licence as they think reasonable.
How to apply
Make your SIA licence application online. You must supply the supporting relevant documentation and pay a fee.
The licence application costs £220 and is non-refundable.
Licences last for 3 years. If you pay your own licence fee, you can claim tax relief - worth £49 for basic rate tax payers. If you’re an employer paying an employee’s licence fee, there will be no tax or National Insurance liability. You may be eligible for a 50% discount for the second application fee if you need more than 1 licence for your activities.
You must renew your licence before it expires to continue working. You can apply to renew your licence up to 4 months before the expiry of your current licence.
The SIA may send someone to inspect your workplace. You may also have to provide any relevant documents or information to show you’re following licence obligations.
