The helicopter was on a VFR flight from a private site near Londonderry, Northern Ireland, to Caernarfon Airport in Wales. Radar data showed that the aircraft was established on a direct track for Caernarfon, flying at an altitude of about 1,600 ft. As the helicopter approached Newry it turned onto an easterly heading and climbed to about 2,000 ft. Some 6.5 nm later the helicopter turned onto a southeasterly track towards Caernarfon Airport, followed by small track changes to the left and right. The groundspeed throughout the flight was about 150 kt. Hill walkers close to the accident site heard the helicopter impact the west face of Shanlieve. All three persons onboard were fatally injured in the impact.
