1. What you need to do

Write to DVLA to tell them a driver has died. Include the person’s driving licence with your letter, if you have it.

You must also tell DVLA separately if you’re selling the vehicle or keeping the vehicle (even if it’s temporary and you’re not using it).

What to include in your letter

Your letter must include:

  • your relationship to the person who died
  • the date they died
  • their name, address and date of birth

Send the letter with their driving licence (if you have it) to:

You don’t need to send a death certificate.

Northern Ireland

There’s a different process in Northern Ireland.
