Abstract

This fact sheet (available in English, French and Spanish) makes five key points about the importance of microbicides as an essential addition to the HIV prevention tool kit for women: current HIV prevention options are not slowing the epidemic; new female-initiated prevention options like microbicides are urgently needed; microbicide development has entered a new and promising chapter; microbicides would be a vital part of a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy; and capturing the promise of microbicides requires continued support.
