Abstract
It is still unclear what immune response can protect against HIV. One way to find out is to study infection of sooty mangabeys, African green monkeys, and mandrills, with SIV, the monkey equivalent of HIV. These monkey species do not develop the simian version of AIDS after SIV infection. Research in this area has found that SIV infection in sooty mangabeys does not result in the chronic immune activation seen in man. Another key difference between sooty mangabeys and other nonhuman primate species is that sooty mangabeys have lower quantities of CCR5, a receptor protein that is used by SIV and HIV to gain entry into and infect cells
