The Argentinian experience of designing and implementing renewable energy auctions: Lessons for sub-Saharan Africa

In 2016, the Argentinian government launched its RenovAr programme to manage the auction of renewable energy generation projects

Abstract

In May 2016, the Argentinian government launched its RenovAr programme to manage the auction of renewable energy (RE) generation projects.

In this report, the authors analyse the design, implementation and results of the first four rounds of the RenovAr programme that took place between May 2016 and mid-2019. They provide some basic background about Argentina and its energy sector, the energy auctions, the programme’s results and outline the main lessons learned and make some recommendations with a final conclusion.

This research is part of the Energy and Economic Growth (EGG) Programme.
