Abstract

This brief article presents recruitment data from a randomized, placebo-controlled, safety and feasibility study of a vaginal microbicide gel with a diaphragm for HIV prevention in South Africa. The target of 120 participants was reached after 12 months of recruitment; 1144 women were approached but did not participate, most commonly because they were not eligible (breast-feeding was the commonest reason), and only rarely for reasons related to the study product. Suggestions are made, based on the authors' experience in this trial, for how to improve recruitment in such trials.
