Artemisia annua: Harvest and post-harvest treatments.

Abstract

This is a summary of a report which is under preparation for publication; the full report will be posted on the MMV website once it has been accepted for publication. The study investigated the harvesting and storage of Artemisia annua, to provide information on how to maximise artemisinin yield. It was found that artemisinin levels in harvested plant material deteriorated significantly after only one or two weeks's storage above 40ºC, especially if the leaves had been damaged during harvesting. Tests conducted in order to identify factors favouring a gain in artemisinin level (sometimes observed with field wilting of A. annua) were not conclusive.
