Exploration of how people living in urban areas of Tanzania learn to cook

This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which individuals acquire cooking skills in urban areas of Tanzania, and the factors that influence their cooking practices.

Abstract

Cooking skills has traditionally been passed down from mothers to daughters within households. With increasing use of digital platforms and social media, the learning and teaching of cooking skills has been changing, particularly in urban areas. This study was guided by the hypothesis that the acquisition of cooking skills has moved away from the family and household. It was further guided by 9 research questions, which explored the ways in which individuals learned to cook, the influence of digital platforms, the role of generation, the types of dishes and techniques learned, the emotional elements of cooking, aspirations and ambitions for cooking, the future of cooking, and the perception of modern energy.

This is an output of the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) programme.
