Abstract

Millennium Alliance (MA) is a tool under the Innovative Ventures and Technologies for Development (INVENT) Programme to implement the programme objective of sourcing Indian innovations in health and agri-food sectors for impact for poor populations in developing countries. The MA is a pool fund run by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) supported by USAID, ICCO, Technology Development Board of the Government of India, ICICI Foundation and DFID among others. Under INVENT, DFID is supporting the development, incubation, scale-up and adoption of social innovations for domestic applications in India and for south-south development in other developing countries. This particular assignment will contribute to exchange, testing and adaptation of Indian agri-food innovations in developing country settings. The focus is on developing appropriate, demand-based applications for developing countries in Africa and South Asia.

INVENT challenges Indian innovators to develop products and approaches that hit the sweet spot at the intersection of:

  • enhanced agricultural productivity
  • greater agricultural sustainability; and
  • greater impact of agriculture on nutrition.

Evidence on Demand was requested to undertake a rapid desk based technical appraisal of a collection of proposals for Indian agricultural innovations that could be tested and adapted in developing countries. This input will provide DFID Global Partnerships, India with prioritised options on which proposals offer the best prospects for relevance and impact in developing countries and will guide the decisions of the funding committee on which proposals will receive funding.
