EMPOWER – Practical Tools for Decision Makers and Citizens to Tackle Sexual Harassment in African Urban Transport

This review sets out to facilitate the creation of practical tools for decision makers to tackle sexual harassment in African urban transport

Abstract

EMPOWER builds the capacity of transport professionals to deliver gender-equitable, inclusive transport with improved participation, diverse sector workforce with a special focus on safety and personal security for women and girls. It specifically addresses the causes of sexually related harassment and assault on women and girls when they travel. This report elaborates on the type and extent of gender based violence, assault and harassment found in urban areas and the consistency of these findings across the globe. The EMPOWER Decision-Making Tool will be a user-friendly, internet-based resource, assisting policymakers and transport providers to develop an evidence-based approach to addressing sexual harassment and personal security within public transport.
