Abstract
The sustainable provision of road infrastructure in developing countries is essential for allowing the rural population to access markets, basic services and employment opportunities. However, with limited funds available and low management capacity in rural roads agencies, a large proportion of the rural road network in Africa remains in poor condition. Research for Community Access Partnership (ReCAP) is supporting research aimed at fostering higher levels of accountability and introducing sound road asset management practices in rural road agencies. A key finding of the project is the need to build a conducive policy environment for rural road management, encourage involvement of stakeholders and widen the options for sustainable funding of road maintenance works.
