Decentralised rural electrification: the critical success factors.

Abstract

This review of recent practice draws on ITDG's [Intermediate Technology Development Group] twenty years experience of supporting off-grid electricity solutions in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Zimbabwe and Peru in particular, and on work by other organisations in other countries, such as Indonesia, Kenya, Vietnam, South Africa. It draws out the generic issues which are likely to be important in any country. Issues discussed include financing, institutional support, ownership, management, local participation, energy management, standards and markets.
