A study of Community Case Management of Pneumonia in Zambia
Abstract
A cross-sectional study to explore the rational use of antibiotics for pneumonia by community health workers (CHWs) and caregivers at the community level in Zambia, in order to inform action to combat resistance while continuing to provide community-level treatment. The study has three main components: 1. Observation to determine if CHWs correctly identify, test and prescribe for suspected pneumonia patients. 2. Follow-up of all caregivers whose children were prescribed antibiotics to determine adherence. 3. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews with CHWs and caregivers to determine influences on rational prescribing and the behaviours and attitudes of the community.
