Register a private rented sector energy standards exemption

Use this service to register an exemption for a private rented sector property that does not meet the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).

Before you start

If you are registering a new exemption, you’ll need:

  • your details, or the landlord’s details if you are an agent acting on their behalf
  • the address of the property
  • a valid energy performance certificate (EPC)
  • evidence of how your property qualifies, depending on the exemption you are registering

After you register a new exemption

You can rent your property immediately after registering a valid exemption. Your local council may contact you to ask for more information.
