Check with your local council to find out if you need to register to run a business as a hairdresser or barber in Northern Ireland.

You may have to register with your local district council so that they can check you’re following health and safety rules. They may charge you a fee and inspect your premises before they give you a certificate of registration.

Health and safety

Even if your council doesn’t need you to register, you’ll still have to comply with local byelaws relating to:

  • making sure your premises are clean, well lit and properly ventilated
  • taking precautions against infection or contamination
  • making sure your staff work hygienically and use equipment efficiently
  • getting public liability insurance cover

You can be fined or have your registration cancelled if you run an unregistered hairdressing business, or don’t follow local byelaws.
