Appointments are usually for a chair or non-executive director for a board of a public body or for a member of an advisory committee.

You can apply to organisations that include:

  • national museums and galleries, eg the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Tate and the National Gallery
  • regulatory bodies, eg the Competition Commission, the Equalities and Human Rights Commission and the Health and Safety Executive
  • expert, advisory bodies, eg the Low Pay Commission, the Committee on Standards in Public Life and the House of Lords Appointments Commission
  • specialist scientific and technical committees, eg the Science Advisory Council

You could help run these organisations and offer advice, drawing on your own experience. Anyone can apply for these positions.

The positions are formally appointed by government ministers through a recruitment process.

Some positions are unpaid, but most will cover your expenses.
