You must notify the police if you sell or dispose of a firearm to anyone in the UK who is not a firearms dealer.

Disposal means selling, hiring, giving or lending.

How to apply

Download a notification form from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) website.

Notification must be given by any party to a sale or disposal who is the holder of: - a Firearm Certificate or Visitor’s Firearm Permit which relates to the firearm in question - a Firearms Dealer’s Certificate

Notification must be sent by registered post or recorded delivery within 72 hours of the transaction.

You’ll need to give:

  • the recipient details, including their firearms certificate number or proof that they are entitled to receive the firearm without a firearms certificate
  • a full description of the firearms sold
  • details of your firearms certificate or dealer certificate

Conditions

You must retain a receipt for the firearm and produce it if required.

Fines and penalties

You may be fined or imprisoned for up to 5 years if you do not notify the PSNI.
