Compatibility of lifejackets with marine evacuation systems (MES): UK21/L008

Adopted EU recommendation LSA-017. UK approved recommendation on the certification of lifejackets used with Marine Evacuation Systems.

Question

Trials have shown that some lifejackets used with Marine Evacuation Systems (MESs) have a tendency to ride up during the descent of the passage, especially in systems comprising a vertical chute. This can cause, and indeed has caused, an evacuee becoming stuck in the chute, which is a direct risk not only to the individual but also to all passengers and crew on board due to blockage and delay of the evacuation process in an emergency.

What action should UK Approved Bodies take in order to help prevent this scenario from taking place?

Recommendation

MES manufacturers shall keep and provide a list to be enclosed in the MES Instructions on board vessel, of recommended lifejacket types which are found suitable for use in their evacuation system.

It is recommended that the following paragraph is included as limitation of use in the approval of the MES UK Type Examination (Module B) Certificate:

Lifejackets intended to be used with this MES should have demonstrated not to hamper a safe descent through the MES and safe access to and entry into the associated liferafts.
