Synopsis

Loss of a deckhand overboard after being snagged by fishing gear when shooting pots.

Action taken

The Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has made recommendations to the owner/skipper with reference to:

• The provision of alternative shooting arrangements to reduce the risks to persons working on deck

• The wearing of lifejackets by all crew working on Deck

• The availability of a sharp knife in easy reach of the crew while shooting and hauling

• The identification of further control measures to reduce the risks to persons working on deck via a risk assessment
