Synopsis
As a result of the failure of a main engine fuel pump inlet pipe fitting, this palletised cargo vessel suffered a major engine room fire about 700 miles west of the UK. A Mayday was broadcast over the VHF and via satellite phone to Stavanger MRCC. The fire was extinguished by ships staff, using a combination of CO2 flooding and traditional fire fighting techniques. The vessel was towed to Tilbury, arriving 30/03/05.
Action taken
The MAIB presented their findings to the Bermudan Maritime Administration who made recommendations to the company regarding supervision of maintenance and the use of DSC in emergencies.
