Synopsis

A fatal accident occurred on the bulk carrier, St Georgij, whilst routine maintenance was being carried out on the vessel’s auxiliary boiler burner system.

Action taken

The Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has written to the owners and managers of St Georgij recommending the following:

  • review of safe working practices

  • improvements in key personnel’s ability to read English instruction books or have manuals translated into the working language of the crew

  • improving the issue of PPE for crewmembers joining the ship
