Synopsis

While performing an exercise in Liverpool, the winch on the starboard lifeboat davit failed, causing the lifeboat to fall into the water. A number of the lifeboat crew suffered minor injuries. The cause of the accident was that the wire drum of the winch failed due to corrosion. The winch was in date for overload test and examination in accordance with statutory requirements.

Action taken

The Chief Inspector has written to the Korean Register of Shipping with the recommendation that they bring this accident to the attention of members of the International Association of Classification Societies.
