Tender to Isabell Princess of the Sea and Vega

Summary

On the evening of 27 July 2024, the tender to the Gibraltar registered motor yacht Isabell Princess of the Sea was underway within the inner harbour in Göcek, Turkey when it collided with the drifting rigid inflatable boat (RIB) Vega. The sole passenger on Vega, a Turkish national, died as a result of the collision.

The tender’s unplanned, high-speed passage violated harbour speed limits, and the driver’s judgement might have been impaired by the consumption of alcohol. Both vessels were being used for recreational purposes at the time of the incident.

Safety issues

  • The tender’s passage was unplanned and conducted at an excess speed.

  • Neither vessel was being operated in line with international and local regulations.

  • Consumption of alcohol may have impaired the judgement of the tender’s driver.

  • The company’s policies did not adequately define the responsibilities and authority for use of the tender for recreational purposes.

Recommendations

No safety recommendations have been made.
