Synopsis

The laden general cargo vessel, Plato was in collision with the fishing vessel Golden Bells II in good visibility.

The Officer of the Watch on Plato was carrying out chart corrections at the time; Golden Bells II was trawling.

Action taken

The Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has written to the owners of Plato to highlight the following:

  • The proper allocation of the collision regulations with special regard to look-out procedures;

  • The obligation to report collisions to the coastal authorities and to render assistance to the other vessel involved until it is established that assistance is no longer required.

The Chief Inspector has also written to the owners of Golden Bells II with regard to:

  • Collision detection training;

  • Following of skipper’s standing orders.
