At about 0535 (UTC+1) ON 25 September 2000, the Cypriot-registered bulk carrier Kinsale collided with the Irish-registered general cargo ship Eastfern about 10.6 miles south-west of Dover harbour.

Safety issues

Contributory causes of the accident were that, until shortly before the collision, Kinsale’s chief officer was unaware of the approach of his ship to Eastfern, and Eastfern’s bridge team was unaware of the approach of Kinsale.

A recommendation has been made to the manager of Kinsale to review operational procedures to remove the necessity for the lookout to leave the bridge to call the other crew members.
