TSI007100 - Border processes: How does Canalisation work within Temporary Storage
This manual will be archived on 15 December 2025. If there is content within this manual you use regularly, email hmrcmanualsteam@hmrc.gov.uk to let us know.
The principle of Canalisation is to control all imported goods through a customs control area. This process allows goods arriving at the airport to be transferred to a primary Internal Temporary Storage Facility (ITSF).
One airline will need to have a commercial relationship with one ITSF, whereby all goods leaving the airline will be entering one nominated ITSF. This linear process enables Border Force (BF) to have control of the goods by providing BF with one single location to deploy officers to for the examination of imported goods.
