SALF1160 - Self Assessment: the legal framework: Returns and Quarterly updates: Quarterly update period - calendar quarters election
If a calendar quarters election applies to a digital obligation tax year (“tax year Y”), the quarterly update periods and their respective deadlines are listed in Table 2. The calendar update periods end on the last day of the month.
The quarterly update period containing the digital termination date for a relevant activity ends with that digital termination date.
Table 2: Quarterly Update Periods and Deadlines
| Quarterly Update Period | Period Coverage | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Period 1 | From the relevant start date to 30 June (tax year Y) | 7 August (tax year Y) |
| Period 2 | From the relevant start date to 30 September (tax year Y) | 7 November (tax year Y) |
| Period 3 | From the relevant start date to 31 December (tax year Y) | 7 February (tax year Y) |
| Period 4 | From the relevant start date to 31 March(end of tax year Y) | 7 May (tax year Y+1) |
In Table 2, “relevant start date” means:
- if the person was required to give quarterly updates in tax year Y-1 and no calendar quarters election was in place for that year - 6th April in tax year Y
- In any other case - 1st April in tax year Y-1
Quarterly updates are cumulative e.g. the second quarterly update contains all the information from the start of period 1 (1 or 6 April) etc.
