The provisions of the Consumer protection Act 1987 have now been superseded in part by Union legislation (Regulation 339/93 which gives responsibility to local authorities under Trading Standards Officers (TSOs). The Department has agreed with the Local Association of Trading Standards Officers (LACOTS) the way problems should be dealt with under consumer protection. The Department is legally bound to hold goods for a specific period when requested to by TSOs.

We have agreed that checks will be set on CHIEF to select entries for scrutiny when requested to or when a problem is identifies by the Department.

When checks are requested nationally, LACOTS will approach CHIEF OPERATIONS direct.
