Teams responsible for the administration of IPR in HMRC: The role of the Intellectual Property Authorisation Unit (IPAU)

IPAU has responsibility for the receipt and processing of applications and renewals of applications made under Council Regulation 1383/2003 for the protection of intellectual property rights. They:

  • Accept and process IP applications and renewals including those under Section 89 of the Trade Marks Act and Section 111 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988
  • Provide advice and guidance on the applications and renewals process to rights holders, HMRC and BF colleagues
  • Maintain a database of live applications and make access to this available to BF and HMRC stakeholders.
