Glossary: Copyright and related right

A copyright is an automatic right given to the author, designer or originator of a work for example a written work or art work. Related rights are similar to copyright but are not related to the work’s actual author; the most obvious examples are rights in a performance, music or film, but could include database rights or other stand alone rights. Copyright gives an owner the exclusive right to prevent reproduction of certain works by third parties but may be licensed to the other parties. A breach of a copyright is often referred to as Piracy.
