Customs checklist
This checklist outlines the essential steps for managing import and export formalities effectively into the UK.
It covers everything from documentation and packaging to licensing and temporary admission procedures.
To make sure all shipments comply with relevant and logistical requirements:
- decide if you will engage a UK established customs intermediary, freight forwarder or complete customs formalities yourself and if you do decide to do so, provide written instructions and representation terms
- check your local export rules and return requirements in the country of dispatch
- confirm commodity restrictions, such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, lithium batteries, food, plants, animal products, and obtain any licenses and or certificates
- prepare documents — commercial invoice in English, packing list, licenses and or permits, insurance
- ensure correct marking and labelling, including country of origin, and compliant packaging (ISPM15 international standards for wood)
- for courier or postal — allow for assessment of duty and VAT and longer transit times and ensure paperwork accompanies consignments
- for Temporary Admission under C108 or ATA carnet, ensure re-export endorsements are obtained prior to final departure
