Crown Dependencies Refunds

This page contains information about Crown Dependencies refunds, including who can be refunded, and how refunds will be processed.

Introduction

Residents of Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man may be entitled to refunds for payments made for certain Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) products.

DBS has recently identified that the legislation covering certain products and services did not permit charging residents of Crown Dependencies prior to 1st August 2024 for:

  • the Update Service (all Crown Dependencies)
  • Basic DBS checks (Isle of Man and Guernsey only)

Please note, the legislation has since changed and DBS can now charge residents of the Crown Dependencies for these products.

Who is eligible

You may be eligible for a refund if you:

  • lived in Guernsey or the Isle of Man at the time of your application and paid for a Basic DBS check (Standard and Enhanced checks are not eligible) prior to 1st August 2024
  • lived in Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man at the time of your application and paid for the Update Service (including annual renewals) prior to 1st August 2024

What you will receive

If eligible, you will receive:

  • a refund of the application fee (DBS application fee only) that was paid at the time for each Basic DBS check (Isle of Man and Guernsey residents only)
  • a refund of £13 for each Update Service subscription (all Crown Dependencies)

How to claim

If you believe you are eligible for a refund, please complete the Crown Dependencies Refund form (ODT, 13.1 KB) and email it to cdrefunds@dbs.gov.uk

When you’ll receive your refund

DBS is processing refunds as quickly as possible. Once processed, refunds will be completed within 28 days.
