The Civil Service Leadership Academy can support senior leaders who are new to the Civil Service.
Around 1 in 5 senior leaders are externally recruited to the SCS, bringing a wealth of experience gained through their careers outside the Civil Service.
The orientation offer supports senior leaders who are new to the organisation, through a combination of face-to-face events, a pairing scheme and online resources.
Workshops and events
Corporate induction events
These workshops provide an opportunity for new recruits to meet peers, share information and draw from the experiences of others in a senior role. Each event is hosted by a senior Civil Service leader, who will share their insights and experiences of the organisation.

Leading in Parliament
This 1-day workshop provides an overview of Parliament’s day-to-day work and processes and helps senior leaders understand their roles and responsibilities in supporting the parliamentary process. This workshop is delivered in Parliament, by a range of high-level parliamentarians and senior officials.
Parliamentary insights seminars for SCS
New senior leaders have access to monthly 1-hour seminars, focussing on specific elements of the parliamentary process. The sessions are delivered by experts from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and overseen by Elizabeth Gardiner, the First Parliamentary Counsel.
The Leadership Academy can pair new SCS recruits with an experienced peer from outside their department to:
- help them get to grips with life in the Civil Service
- understand the wider cultures and practices of the organisation
- expand their networks
If you would like to be matched with a suitable peer, please contact: email@example.com.
