London C panel

Applications are invited from advocates interested in joining the London C Panel to undertake civil and EU work for government departments. Members of the C panel will be expected to have at least two years experience in actual practice (from end of 2nd six months’ pupillage for barristers, date of commencement of advocacy for solicitors).

Appointments will be for five years. Those appointed to the C panel will often provide (but not exclusively) the A and B panel members of the future and so should have the potential to join the A panel.

There are vacancies on the panel in all areas of public and private law. The Attorney General is particularly looking to deepen capacity in: admiralty/shipping; charities; trusts & wills; child protection/social care; contractual/commercial; competition; construction; corporate; costs; direct/indirect tax; education; energy/utilities; IT; insolvency; private international; intellectual property; land, planning & environmental; and public procurement.

Application

We have introduced an online application process If you are considering making an application to join the C Panel please register an expression of interest as soon as possible using the following link Please note that registering an interest does not commit you to making an application if you later decide not to do so.

Once you have registered, you will be provided with a link to access the online portal. You will then be able to obtain detailed guidance and compile your application and submit it to us electronically. We ask that you allow plenty of time to complete the online application in case of problems.

Applications must be submitted by noon on Friday 28 October 2016.

Further information and mentoring

If you have any queries, please feel free to raise them in the first instance with the Government Legal Department panel counsel team via email panelcounsel@governmentlegal.gov.uk or on 020 7210 1506.

We wish to encourage applications from as wide a range as possible of those eligible to apply. We will therefore endeavour to put advocates who are considering applying for the C Panel and who want to discuss the application process, in touch with an established Panel member. The mentor will discuss either by telephone or in a meeting the application process, the eligibility criteria and the presentation of relevant information on the application form.

If you are considering applying and want a mentor please contact the Government Legal Department panel counsel team, via email: anna.rickard@governmentlegal.gov.uk on or before close on 3 October 2016.

Public International Law (PIL) Panel of Counsel

Applications are invited for appointment to the Attorney General’s Public International Law (PIL) Panel of Counsel in order to undertake public international law and international trade law work for the Government.
The PIL Panel was created in 2014 and supplements the work of the Attorney General’s existing panels of civil counsel.

In contrast to the other panels maintained by the Attorney General, membership of the PIL Panel is expressly open to solicitors and other UK-qualified lawyers who do not have a higher court advocacy qualification. We particularly welcome applications from those with experience in international trade law and negotiations. Appointments to the PIL Panel of counsel are for a period of five years. Existing members of the PIL Panel remain within the term of their original appointment and need not re-apply for their current panel.
