Apply for a certificate of exemption to keep an XL Bully dog (Scotland only)

From 1 August 2024, it will be an offence to keep an XL Bully dog in Scotland unless you have a certificate of exemption.

Read the conformation standard guidance on the Scottish Government website to help you decide whether your dog is an XL Bully and requires a certificate of exemption. The closing date for applications is 31 July 2024.

You can only use this service if you live in Scotland.

How to get a certificate of exemption

Before you apply, read the guidance on the Scottish Government website to find out about the conditions you must meet - including getting the dog neutered and microchipped, and taking out third party public liability insurance.

Apply for a certificate of exemption in Scotland

You can use this online service for 1 dog per application. You must complete an application for each dog you wish to register.

If your dog has already been neutered, you and your vet must fill in a confirmation of neutering form after you have applied for the exemption. Your vet must then return the form to Scottish Government. You must then return the form to the Scottish government.
