Air pollution monitoring: Rural Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) Network

How to get air pollution data from the Rural NO2 Network and the pollutants it measures.

The Rural NO2 Network is part of the UK Eutrophying and Acidifying Atmospheric Pollutants (UKEAP) Network.

The UKEAP network monitors long-term pollutant trends in rural and remote locations.

What the Rural NO2 Network measures

This network measures NO2 in rural locations. It helps map background concentrations of NO2 for pollution modelling.

How the Rural NO2 Network measures data

This network uses diffusion tubes to collect data. Each tube has a wind protection cap (fitted in 2022) to prevent the data being affected by wind turbulence.

We collect the diffusion tubes every month and send them to a laboratory for analysis.

When the Rural NO2 Network started

This network started on 4 January 1993.

Latest UKEAP annual report

The UKEAP annual report 2024 provides:

  • network operation updates
  • annual pollutant concentrations
  • interpretation of data and trends
  • a summary of scientific research, publications and other activities related to the network
