In recent years artificial intelligence (AI), data science and machine learning (ML) have rapidly risen to prominence, offering breakthroughs in many areas previously beyond the capabilities of traditional approaches to computing. They offer the ability for machines to provide new insight into the vast quantities of data that are produced at an ever-greater rate and sophisticated actions to be performed that previously could only be accomplished by humans.
Such ability has become possible due to a combination of the volume of data produced and increased computational capability. In particular, these advances have been made possible through the development of machine learning methods; so while this guide will cover AI and data science, mostly it is about ML.
In the wake of this revolution, there is left a trail of bewildering terminology and hype.
This short guide is intended to provide some explanation of the most common terminology and help you separate fact from fiction.
