Disabled access

The British Government is keen to ensure that buildings and services are fully accessible to disabled members of the public. Wherever possible, we have made our buildings and services accessible. Sometimes however, this is not possible due to security or other restrictions. In Pretoria, the High Commission is located in protected premises at 255 Hill Street (between Schoeman and Pretorius street) with the main entry for visitors being accessed from Hill Street. Access is controlled by security staff and all visitors are required to be cleared by security before being allowed access into the High Commission building. To assist disabled visitors, we have set out below details of disabled access at this High Commission. We hope this information is helpful.

General physical access

  • Entrances: there is one easy access available into the main High Commission building and prior notification is desirable
  • Toilets: there are toilet facilities which can accommodate wheelchairs
  • Floor coverings, doorways, and handles are of standard design
  • The entrance area is well lit
  • Emergency/evacuation: evacuation is on foot leading to most of the exit points. In case of an emergency, the High Commission staff will be able to assist

Access for visually-impaired visitors

  • Essential signage is clear and easy to read
  • Guide dogs are welcome
  • The Public Address system can be heard from all rooms within the building

Access for Deaf/hard of hearing visitors

  • Hearing loops are not currently available
  • There are no minicom or textphones
  • There are no sign language facilities
  • Hearing dogs are welcome

Contact us

Please let us know if you have any special requirements or would like to check what facilities we have for people with disabilities. Contact our main receptionist at the High Commission on 012 421 7500 who will try to find an alternative way of providing access for you.
