General information

The British diplomatic presence in Slovakia consists of the British Embassy in Bratislava. Staff at the mission fall into two groups:

  • UK-based staff: career diplomatic staff, employed directly by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London, and sent to work at posts abroad for periods of 3-5 years
  • Locally employed staff: local residents, employed in accordance with local employment law and practices

Vacancies for local staff employed directly by the British Embassy in Bratislava are rare. When positions become available, they are always listed on our website below.

Please be aware that there are limited opportunities for promotion or progression, however, staff are encouraged to apply for other vacancies within the Embassy as they arise.

Application process

Applications for employment with the British Embassy in Bratislava should be sent by e-mail in response to advertised vacancies only. Please refer to the guidance in our job advertisements.

When applying, please submit a completed job application form Job Application form (MS Word Document, 111KB) [new window] and ensure all sections are filled out and use the Supporting Statement box to explain clearly the motivation, skills and experience you could bring to the role. Please also attach your current CV in English.

We do not process unsolicited applications. Only those applying for a specific position and who are selected for interview will be contacted. No applications will be returned.

All applicants must have a high level of spoken and written English (unless stated otherwise) and for most positions an additional fluency in Slovak will be required.

The Embassy will consider all applications and invite a selection of candidates for interview. All invited candidates can expect a competency-based interview conducted in English by a panel of embassy staff. During the interview, candidates will be asked about their work experience, career history and skills. Interviews may also include a short practical exercise testing specific skills required for each role.

Internships

The Embassy occasionally offers internships which are advertised under Current Vacancies. This opportunity is for students and recent graduates who are local residents.

Students at UK universities who are British nationals and are considering a career in the Diplomatic Service can apply to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London for a placement under the FCO placement scheme or a variety of other schemes run by other government departments.
