World-class science celebrated in Moscow
The British Embassy Science and Innovation Network held a lecture in Moscow on next-generation exhibitions at the UK’s most world-class science museums.
The lecture was delivered by Ian Blatchford, Director of the UK’s Science Museum Group.
The event, held on the eve of the All Russia Science Festival took place at the recently renovated Moscow Planetarium which boasts £4.5 m worth of British immersive theatre technology. Both the Planetarium and the All Russia Festival were partners in the event.
Mr Blatchford gave a dynamic virtual adventure covering the latest initiatives and technical innovations of British science museums. He also outlined two key exhibitions at the London Science Museum showcasing Soviet and Russian prowess in science and engineering: a “Cosmonauts” exhibition opening in October 2014 and a “Collider” opening on 13 November 2013 about the Large Hadron Collider at Cern
British Ambassador, Tim Barrow, praised the importance of cooperation between UK and Russia in science and space under the joint UK-Russia Year of Culture 2014.
Dr Julia Knights, Head of Science & Innovation said: “This lecture marks a series of UK Russia Science lectures funded by the UK government to showcase the UK as a world-class destination for Science and Innovation in terms of carrying out fundamental and applied research and the life-changing experiences offered by our top Science museums. Our event was timely in demonstrating the UK’s science strengths given that our 23rd Briton, Prof Higgs of the University of Edinburgh, was this week awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics jointly with Belgian scientist Francois Englert for their work on the theory of the Higgs Boson”.
