UN International Women’s Day
British Embassy Tokyo joins activities around the world to mark UN International Women’s Day
Today is the 103rd UN International Women’s Day. The UK is committed to the promotion and protection of women’s rights overseas, as it is one of our six key human rights priorities. This year’s theme for the UK is “women’s economic empowerment and raising girls’ aspirations”.
The British Embassy Tokyo will be hosting an event later this month on the economic and social benefits of achieving a gender balanced workforce to showcase the UK’s experience of government and business working together to help optimise women’s contribution to economic growth. A range of distinguished speakers from British and Japanese government, academia and private sector will share their experiences and aspirations to take forward this agenda in both countries.
In addition to this, the UK has prioritised tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and the Prevention of Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI). In June this year, the Foreign Office will host the first PSVI Conference in London. We are working closely with all our PSVI partner countries, including Japan, to tackle this global issue.
