UK Statement on Thailand at the 25th Session of the Universal Periodic Review, Geneva, 2 - 13 May 2016
The UK delivers its statement on the Universal Periodic Review of Thailand 11 May 2016.

Thank you, Mr President,
The United Kingdom wants to work collaboratively with the Kingdom of Thailand throughout its 2nd UPR Cycle. We strongly encourage Thailand to engage actively with this process and support their civil society. We have the following recommendations:

To ensure that there are no restrictions on freedom of expression especially for the media and human rights defenders, and that no one faces threats and harassment, including ‘attitude adjustment’, for expressing their views, and that all legislation affecting freedom of expression is compatible and implemented in line with Thailand’s international obligations, as recommended by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders’ observations on communications in 2016.

In line with rules 83-85 of the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, “the Nelson Mandela Rules”, to create an external, independent inspection body that has access to all categories of prisoners in places of detention under the Ministry of Justice.
