Rt Hon Minister of State for International Development Desmond Swayne, TD MP visited Tajikistan from 15 to 17 February.

Rt Hon Desmond Swayne MP, Minister of State for International Development, today completed his two day visit to Tajikistan. During his visit the Minister emphasised the United Kingdom’s (UK) commitment and role as a valuable partner in Tajikistan and the region through support provided by its bilateral and regional development assistance.

At the end of his visit the Rt Hon Desmond Swayne, MP said:

The UK is committed to supporting the development of a stable, prosperous, and well-governed Tajikistan. We are finalising plans for a future programme of support focusing on governance, inclusive economic development and resilience. These are essential if Tajikistan is to meet its economic growth and poverty reduction aspirations.

I’m very pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with government, business and civil society to discuss the important work that has already been done and challenges they are facing. The UK’s support is already helping make a difference in areas such as agricultural growth, women’s economic empowerment and improving public financial management.

The UK is also supporting Tajikistan through important regional projects such as the Central Asia – South Asia Electricity Transmission Project (CASA 1000). This will help Tajikistan generate revenues to meet its winter energy needs, by trading surplus hydropower to South Asia in the summer. This will allow people in Tajikistan to have better access to reliable electricity during the winter months to heat their homes, schools, and hospitals.

I look forward to the strengthened partnership between UK and Tajikistan.

In a full program the Minister met with His Excellency the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, Minister of Economy and Trade Mr Hikmatullo Negmatzoda, and together with the Minister of Energy and Water Resources Mr Usmonali Usmonzoda visited the Nurek Hydro Power Plant. In addition the Minister also met with members of Civil Society, the business community and partners who deliver UK development assistance in Tajikistan.
