UK companies explore business opportunities in transport and sports infrastructure in Peru
Minister of State for Latin America, along with British companies, met Peruvian authorities at the iconic National Stadium in Lima to explore potential business partnerships.
As part of his first visit to Peru on 13 March, the Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP, Minister of State for Latin America, along with six British companies, met Peruvian authorities at the iconic National Stadium in Lima to explore potential business partnerships in support of Peru’s ambitious infrastructure development plan, and in the run up to Lima hosting the Pan American Games in 2019.
Minister Hugo Swire said he was hugely impressed by the business opportunities in Peru for UK companies and by Peruvian authorities’ interest in doing more businesses with the UK.
At the first meeting, Christy Garcia Godos, Head of Rail Projects at ProInversion (Peru’s government agency to promote private investment) presented trade and investment opportunities for British businesses related to rail/metro construction and operation, including ambitious projects such as developing the Metro System for Lima and the Huancayo-Huancavelica railway. Garcia Godos invited UK companies to continue pursuing opportunities in the railway market, which is new but with huge potential, and to share their experience with Peruvian companies.
Regarding the opportunities in major sports events, the UK companies that took part in the visit were keen to understand the plans to host the Pan American Games in 2019. The President of Peru’s Olympic Committee, Jose Quiñones, and the President of Peru’s Institute of Sports, Francisco Boza, shared with the UK firms their initial plans for sports infrastructure and facilities upgrades for the 2019 Pan American Games. This represents a great opportunity to share UK experience of organising the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. “Definitely London 2012 is part of our inspiration to use the power of sport to inspire our children and leave a legacy”, said Jose Quiñones.
Later in the year, London will become the first city in the world to host the successful InPeru trade roadshow three years in a row. The new dedicated trade office Peru will open in London in the spring this year and the recently ratified EU/Peru FTA will also boost UK-Peru trade.
