UK-Busan campaign day of events

UK representatives in Korea in Busan on 24 November for key part of ongoing Busan campaign

As part of the UK’s Busan campaign, on 24 November the British Ambassador, Charles Hay, and representatives from the British Embassy, British Council, British Chamber of Commerce in Korea, UK Visas International will be coming to Busan for a day of events culminating in a ‘UK meets Busan’ reception. Events during the day include high level meetings between the British Ambassador and key figures in Busan, an education seminar for Koreans interested in studying English or studying in the UK, a visa clinic and, finally, a reception for high level UK and Korean representatives from across business, government, academia and the media.

Speaking ahead of the events, British Ambassador Charles Hay said:

Busan is a very important city for the UK and for me personally. The UK has a strong relationship with Busan across a range of sectors – business, culture, education – not to mention the human links, with a good number of British nationals calling Busan their home. I did a homestay in Busan before I started my time as British Ambassador and hold many fond memories of the great city. The 24 November will be an excellent opportunity to build on these connections and partnerships that we have been strengthening during the Busan campaign. This will be a great chance to show people in Busan what the UK has to offer and strengthen and expand relations between Busan and the UK.

On 4 July 2016 the British Embassy in Seoul launched a two year-long campaign of outreach to Busan, to get under the skin of its economic dynamics and politics and look for opportunities for partnerships with the town and surrounding region.

The main event of the campaign so far was the visit of the Lord Mayor of London to South Korea between 16-20 July. While in Busan his key engagements included: visiting the largest floating installation in the world, ‘The Prelude’ being built on Geoje Island; meeting the Mayor of Busan and other key members of Busan Metropolitan Government; meeting with key business figures from the UK and Busan at a Business Forum at the Busan International Finance Centre. While in Busan he discussed ways the UK and Busan can build on our already strong relations in particular in the sectors of marine, financial services and fintech.

Recently we have had a number of interesting and exciting events, including a British Minister attending the D5 meeting, UK stands at G-Star and Offshore Korea and a seminar for start-ups – all in Busan. Looking to the future, University of Lancaster will be signing an MOU with Busan Jinhae Financial Economic Zone in December.
