Sport is GREAT Britain: Surfers not Street children in UK

Umthombo Surf Project, led by Tom Hewitt, took four street children on a surfing tour to the UK this past June.

Umthombo Surf Project, led by Tom Hewitt, took four street children on a surfing tour to the UK this past June. The surfers participated in a number of events during their 4 week stay in the UK including speaking (and surfing) in Cornwall, Devon and Wales, attending fundraisers, in London and one on a river boat on the Thames.

Umthombo is a Street Child NGO operating in Durban which aims to promote, amoungst others, health awareness and personal development using surf coaching to encourage participation. “When I surf I feel like I am flying. I am far above street life.” Khotso, age 15, former street child part of Umthombo. Over the years the surf programme has seen several ‘graduates’ find gainful employment in the popular surfing sector.
