British Minister of State, Hugo Swire, concluded his visit to Costa Rica with a dinner event attended by members of the UK Alumni Association, which was established over a year and a half ago. Also present at the evening’s event was Dr. María Gabriela Alvarado, Costa Rica’s recipient of the Chevening scholarship for the year 2014/2015.

Chevening Scholarships, the British government’s prestigious scholarship programme, is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. It was therefore an added honour to have Minister Swire, the government’s Chevening champion, on hand to meet this country’s latest Chevening awardee, Dr. María Gabriela Alvarado, and to personally present her with this outstanding recognition.

Dr Alvarado is a medical doctor who will be undertaking an MSc in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr Alvarado is also the daughter of a former UK scholar, Mrs Marta Blanco Cordero, who was also present on the evening, and was clearly happy to see her daughter keeping up a proud family tradition.
