Opening sessions of a workshop with local lawyers in Khorog

During his visit Mr Woodham met with Qodir Qosimov, Governor of Badakhshan; members of civil society; VSO volunteers working on tourism and the region’s free economic zone; as well as representatives of the Aga Khan Development Network. Mr Woodham also attended the opening sessions of a workshop with local lawyers, aiming to develop local legal capacity. This workshop was the first of several activities in this area that has been arranged by the American Bar Association under the auspices of the British Government’s Conflict Pool. Those participating welcomed the opportunity to attend the workshop which they stated provided a welcome opportunity to development their knowledge of amendments to the Tajik criminal code; and other areas where there experience had previously been limited.

During his meetings, Mr Woodham, discussed current conditions in Khorog and throughout GBAO, whilst also hearing from a number of experts who briefed him on the opportunities and challenges surrounding economic development in the region.
